The TYR Avictor Prelude swim jammer is a high-end suit manufactured by TYR.

The company, founded in Southern California in the 1980s, has a reputation for excellence in competitive swimwear. The FINA approved TYR Avictor Prelude Short Jammer is hailed as the fastest swimsuit in TYR’s line. The company works hard to collaborate with experts and athletes to create versatile, innovative swimwear that is both comfortable and competitive. This suit provides features to enhance strength and mobility, including a water-repellent design and fully-flexible compression.

The Avictor Prelude features “hydrospheric” technology. According to TYR, this technology causes the water to flow around the suit without penetrating it. The design allows the water to create a sort of “sphere” of water around the outside of the suit while not penetrating the jammer. This creates a smooth surface for the water to pass by, reducing friction and expending less energy. The technology also causes the water to conform to the body in a way that supports natural movement, enabling a swimmer to move faster and more efficiently.

Another water-friendly feature of this jammer is its special coating. Designed to repel, not absorb, water, the coating allows the TYR Avictor Prelude to stay dry and friction-free as much as possible. Water absorption creates extra drag and unnecessary weight for the swimmer to carry. By repelling the water with this coating, the Prelude maximizes speed and minimizes energy expended.

TYR Avictor Prelude Delivers Great Compression

The design of this jammer places an emphasis on allowing for natural movement. The suit is designed with comfort and mobility in mind by providing compression that is strongly supportive but not restrictive. The Avictor Prelude jammer is engineered to provide strong compression that allows for differences in body shapes and sizes. The bonded seams are designed to flex and reshape to the body of the wearer, allowing the suit to provide for unrestricted movement and versatile fit. It is designed to stretch in all directions, allowing full mobility for the swimmer and making it a versatile all-around suit.

This suit is also designed to be durable. Created to last through “long meets and multiple swims” while still retaining its compression features, the TYR Avictor Prelude is built for durability.  While some suits may lose compression due to being stretched, this suit is designed to last longer and still retain its ability to fit tightly to provide support and reduce drag, even after extended use.

The exact fabric combination for the Avictor Prelude is made of two elements: nylon and lycra spandex, in 70% nylon/ 30% lycra spandex combination. The nylon element makes the suit more comfortable than those featuring polyester farbics. The suit’s lycra spandex provides flexibility and stretching to facilitate mobility for a full range of motion. This product is made in the United States.

This jammer is considered a “short” jammer, meaning it hits above the knees a bit higher than a normal jammer. The TYR Avictor Prelude jammer is available in a variety of different colors and patterns which cover the entire suit. It is currently available in Black Multi, Grey/Red, Black/Black, Blue/Pink, Red/White/Blue, Black/Blue, and Black/Green print styles.

The Arena Powerskin Carbon Air jammer is the latest development for Arena’s POWERSKIN Carbon collection. This suit FINA approved suit offers many features and strongly emphasized comfort. The Area Carbon Air is designed to be comfortable when wearing and also to be lightweight (hence, “Air”). However, the suit also utilizes carbon fiber technology to enhance compression, allowing the suit to offer desirable traits over a wide spectrum.

This suit is designed with the main idea to be light and comfortable. As a racing suit, the Arena suit’s smooth construction serves to give the suit as little resistance as possible in the water while still featuring the durability and compression strength necessary for a competitive jammer. This mind-set in the design creates a well-rounded suit that is built with the wearer in mind, not just the race.

Carbon fibers are a technology used in a variety of capacities, typically for high-stress materials in a diverse variety of fields ranging from aerospace to civil engineering to performance sportswear. These fibers are known to be both lightweight and very strong, so they offer the ability to have. By utilizing carbon fibers within the Powerskin Carbon Air, the consumer is presented with a durable suit that is not bulky.

In order to balance comfort and performance capacity, this suit combines two other materials with the carbon fiber in its construction. Elastane (also known as Spandex) and nylon materials are also utilized. This is a significantly lightweight combination designed to be a “second skin” for the wearer. Each component in the material has a different function, and their combination make the suit a well-rounded piece. Special carbon rings are positioned throughout the Carbon Air at stretch points to reinforce the suit, providing support and control where necessary. The elastane provides the flexibility and conformity of the suit. Nylon fibers are incorporated to ensure that the suit is comfortable. This woven combination is designed to give the Arena Carbon Air competitive features on all levels.

This suit is advertised as being 30% lighter than the previous Arena incarnation, the Carbon Pro. This latest suit’s light design allows for flexibility with moment and comfort while in the water, as well as lowering the amount of excess weight and resistance the swimmer must carry, therefore increasing capacity for speed and endurance.

The Carbon Air is designed to provide compression to specific muscle groups, as opposed to simply full compression throughout the suit. By providing support directed towards strategic areas, the suit can provide the necessary compression without compromising range of motion.

The carbon fiber incorporated creates strong compression and durability features while still remaining lightweight.

While it does provide selective compression, this Carbon Air jammer’s light construction also makes it very flexible, meaning it is easy to move and adjust. The suit is designed to allow freedom of movement to enhance the swimmer’s ability to move through the water with a variety of strokes. This suit features specifically designed stretch points to enhance comfort. These stretch points are positioned strategically so as to support the body’s natural movements.

The Arena Powerskin Carbon Air jammer is currently available in three color combinations: Electric Blue/Titanium Blue, Fuchsia/Titanium Blue, and Dark Grey/Black. It is designed to fit above the knees.

The Nike NG-1 Jammer was designed as a better, “next generation” addition to Nike’s growing collection of technical swimwear. Although an established name in the sportswear world, Nike is still young in the swimwear arena. Developed using input from athletes who had experience with Nike’s previous jammer incarnations, he Nike NG-1 Jammer is a FINA-approved suit created to be a versatile and comfortable option that’s features met popular demands. Designed to meet the diverse needs of different strokes, this suit was built with the wearer in mind.

Each seam in the Nike NG-1 Jammer is bonded rather than sewn. This enables the suit to have a smooth surface both inside and out. On the inside, this makes the suit comfortable to wear and prevents rubbing and chaffing. On the outside, the smooth surface creates the least resistance possible which reduces drag and increases speed.

Nike NG-1 Jammer Uses Dual Layers

This suit is designed with two layers of water-repellent fabric. This thicker outer layer allows for effective compression and serves to streamline the suit so that it moves smoothly through the water and creates as little resistance as possible. This combination of compression and water resistance limits the friction the suit causes, allowing the swimmer to propel themselves through the water using less energy.

The inside layer of the NG-1 Jammer is a more lightweight, comfortable fabric which also repels water. The design allows the suit to flex and move with the wearer. This feature allows the suit to be comfortable and functional for all swim strokes, making it versatile. This fabric provides stability while allowing the wearer to move freely through their strokes.
This suit features what is called “movement based compression.” It contains sections in the fabric designed to be compressive panels to support strategic muscles and enhance performance ability.

The suit is strategically pieced together to enhance performance. The seam lines are reinforced to be additionally durable while still maintaining a smooth surface. These special seams provide support and lift to the oblique and gluteal muscles. This enhances the body’s natural ability to propel itself, as well as supporting the natural movements within the range of motion utilized during different strokes.

Hi-stretch recovery tape is placed along seam lines in order to enhance the suit’s ability to provide support and compression. This tape lies flat against the main fabric of the NG-1 to provide maximum comfort. Seams on the hip and leg feature this hi-stretch recovery tape to ensure the suit maintains its original shape as much as possible while remaining as flexible as possible. The leg openings also share this feature, which helps the suit to remain in place.
The waistband is bonded to lie flat and does not have a raised seam. It is also reinforced and has a lowered draw cord channel. These features enhance the Nike NG-1’s ability to create a water-proof seal and prevent as much drag as possible. This design also makes it much more difficult for the suit to move during use, enabling the least amount of drag and the most amount of comfort possible.

Nike places a high value on style to complement functionality in their products. Each NG-1 Jammer features different colors on the outside and inside layers. The product is currently available in Black, Active Red, and Photo Blue. Each color choice is paired with a different but complimentary color on the inside layer of the suit.

Overall, Nike’s NG-1 Jammer is a versatile suit designed based on consumer’s desires for functionality, versatility, and capability.

The Adidas Adizero XVI Breaststroke Jammer is — as far as we know — the only stroke-specific jammer currently on the market. In addition to this breaststroke jammer, Speedo offers the Adizero XVI Freestyle jammer.

The primary feature that makes this suit uniquely designed for breaststrokers is the Polyurethane bands which run on the inside and outside of the legs. The bands are strategically placed to help the breaststroke kick motion. The bands give swimmers the freedom of leg movement required from breaststroke, while helping the swimmer to snap back into a streamline position at the end of each kick. The bands on the Adidas Adizero XV! Freestyle jammer, however, run up the thigh and cross around the back. This placement helps support a freestyle kick technique. Adidas calls these strategically-placed bands X-TRA Fit.

The Adidas Adizero XVI Breaststroke Jammer is made with a blend of Nylon (76%) and Spandex (24%). The Spandex (AKA Elastane) is used to deliver good muscle compression, which helps keep the swimmer hydrodynamic and in a streamline position. The nylon content of the fabric helps make the suit comfortable, which is good because Spandex by itself is not a particular soft fabric.

Also, neither Spandex nor nylon are very resistant to chlorine. Over time, they will be brake down and the suit will start to fail. This is the case for most technical suits. Wearing the suit only at race time, then rinsing in non-chlorinated water immediately after the race is essential to getting the most from the suit.

X-TRA Flow Fabric Used in the Adizero XVI

In addition to strategically-placed bands and the compression fabric, Adidas have placed “fabric texturing” to help to reduce the swimmer’s drag coefficient. They call this texturing X-TRA FLOW and is the result of rigorous research and development in the pool and wind tunnels. The suit is constructed using a bonding process, which creates lower-profile for the seems, compared to traditional stitched seems.

While Adidas are not typically known for the swim equipment, they have created a technical suit that rivals Speedo, Arena and other top manufacturers. Also, to their credit, they have thought creatively about how a suit might be constructed differently, based on the stroke.

The FINA guidelines are quite restrictive, in terms of the suit’s fabric. Manufacturers have creatively thought about how to construct a suit which provides support and compression for the swimmer. We’d expect other swim jammer manufacturers to follow suit (pun intended) and start developing stroke-specific jammers.

The Adidas Adizero XVI Breaststroke Jammer is approved by FINA for competition.

The Adidas Adizero XVI Freestyle Jammer is the manufacturer’s top-of-the-line race swimsuits. While the sports clothing brand is one of the most famous in the world, Adidas has yet to make a splash into the swimming world. They have been doing so recently, sponsoring world-class athletes such as Allison Schmidt, Cesar Cielo and Britta Steffen.

The Adizero XVI Freestyle jammer is designed with freestylers in mind. A sister product, the Men’s Adizero XVI Breaststroke Jammer, is designed especially for breaststrokers.

The suit is made with a 76% Nylon/ 24% elastane (Spandex) blend similar to that of Speedo’s Fastskin LZR Racer Elite 2. The suit delivers good compression, thanks to the high Spandex content. Adidas calls this their X-TRA Energy feature. The compression not only helps to reduce the swimmer’s drag streamline, but also helps them to recover quicker.

Adidas chose to blend Nylon with the Spandex. This offers more comfort than using polyester. However, neither Nylon nor Spandex are chlorine resistant and will breakdown after several uses. To get the most out of the Adizero XVI Freestyle jammer, it’s important to follow the care instructions closely.

In addition to a high-compression fabric, Adidas also strategically places the suits panels to give extra compression in critical areas. Polyurethane bands running down the inner thighs and back of the suit help to support the freestyler’s stroke and motion. (The tape on the Adizero XVI Breastroke Jammer runs in a different location.) The tape helps the swimmer to hold a good freestyle position, especially when fatigue set in. The Adidas marketing folks have come up with the terms X-TRA Flow and X-TRA Fit.

The suit’s fabric is woven together using bonded seems, which also helps keep a low-profile suit. The Adidas Adizero XVI Freestyle Jammer is FINA Approved for competition.

The MP Expresso Jammer is the result of a partnership between suit manufacturer AquaSphere and Michael Phelps, the most decorated olympian of all time. AquaSphere is not a well-known swimwear brand, despite being on the sport equipment scene for over 18 years and having considerable experience in the triathlon and rec swimming space. In fact, the MP Xpresso Jammer is, currently, their only tech suit. Despite being a newcomer, AquaSphere have produced a good product, worthy of being considered alongside Speedo’s LZR Racer X and Arena’s Powerskin Carbon jammers.

AquaSphere was originally established in Genoa, Italy in 1998. The Xpresso jammer was designed and manufactured in Italy. The company now has offices in California. Michael Phelps partnered with AquaSphere in August 2014. Phelps said, “I really wanted a suit that allows me to have a better range of motion and that allows me and my body to move naturally through the water.” He calls the MP Xpresso the most comfortable and fastest suit he has ever worn.

The Xpresso is constructed using Aqua Sphere’s proprietary Exo-Foil Fabric. The fabric uses two different fabrics to give extra compression. The Exterior uses 56% Polyamide and 44% Elastane. (Polyamide is also known as Nylon while Elastane is known as Lycra.) Nylon provides a comfortable fit and absorbed less water than other appropriate fabrics, like polyester. Lycra (AKA Spandex) is the material that gives technical suits stretch and compression.

This suit has one of the highest amounts of Spandex of any technical suit on the market, which helps form a great fit. The Speedo LZR Racer X, for example, is constructed using a 65% Nylon / 35% Lycra material. The Arena Powerskin Ultra jammer has slightly higher Lycra content, constructed using 50% Nylon / 47% Lycra / 3% Carbon fiber.

While Lycra provides great compression and is very water resistant, it is not a comfortable fabric. A fabric constructed from 40-50% Lycra is not soft on the skin. Aquashere, therefore, use a 77% polyamide and 23% Elastane blend for the suit’s lining. The higher nylon content adds extra comfort to the suit. The result is a comfortable suit, which compresses the leg muscles yet provides a good range of motion.

The MP Xpresso is constructed using panels that, according to AquaSphere, “follow the femoral artery,” which delivers blood to the lower legs and feet. AquaSphere call this feature Aqua Core and claim that these panels increases circulation, helping with muscle recovery.

The Aqua Core panels are joined using bonded seams, which deliver a much lower profile than traditional ditched seams, therefore delivering less drag on the swimmer. This type of construction has become common in high-end tech suits. The MP Xpresso also uses silicone leg grips to provide a tight fit.

The suit is available in black & yellow, black & silver, blue & black and a USA flag edition.

All-in-all, the Michael Phelps Xpresso jammer delivers a solid feature set. Swimmers using the suit compare it to many other high-end tech suits from reputable brands, like Speedo and Arena.

Speedo’s LZR Racer X Jammer is their latest top-of-the line swim jammer. They claim that it’s the “most advanced racing system yet.” We expect to see Ryan Lochte and other Speedo-sponsored swimmers competing in these jammers at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Speedo has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of swimsuit technology. Their Aqualab research facility in the UK explores new fabrics and manufacturing techniques to help swimmers shave time off their swims. They claim that the LZR Racer X’s “development has been made possible through analyses of the physical and psychological aspects of competitive swimming with over 330 elite swimmers, including multiple world-record holder Ryan Lochte, and 20 swimming experts from 26 countries.

The suit is made from two fabrics — LZR Racer CompreX and LZR Racer PulseLite. The Pulselite is a lightweight fabrics with good endurance. The LZR Racer Comprex is engineered to provide one-way compression. The fabric compresses the muscles horizontally but stretches vertically, to allow the swimmer freedom-of-motion. The horizontal compression helps reduce the swimmer’s drag while increasing muscle efficiency.

The suit is composed of 65% Nylon and 35% LYCRA Spandex. Spandex is a popular fabric for use in jammers because it expands to form a tight fit. However, Spandex is not chlorine-resistance and, therefore, breaks down over time. Most jammers use a blend of fabrics, including Spandex or a similar material to give the suit a tight fit. In addition to a material that stretches, a jammer normally includes polyester or nylon. Speedo has chosen to use nylon over polyester in their LZR Racer X jammer. Nylon is more comfortable than Polyester, plus it absorbs less water. However, nylon tends to lose its color and shape faster than polyester suits. This jammer, like all technical suits, is made to be used for a swimmer’s most important races. It will become less effective with each use, although proper care and maintenance can extend the suit’s life.

The Speedo LZR Racer X Jammer is constructed using ultrasonically welded seams. This creates a very strong low-profile seam, which helps to cut down on the swimmer’s friction. The seams are designed in an “X” shape, thus giving the suit its name. According to Speedo, this x-shape helps connect the “muscular kinetic chain.”

The suit has been approved by FINA and is available in Bright Purple, Coral, Bright Green, Black. Speedo also offers a high waist version of this suit.

The Speedo LZR Racer X Jammer has received rave reviews, with many swimmers claiming this to be the best technical suit they have owned. Several swimmers, however, have expressed concerns with the fabric “rippling” around the seams. If you are looking for a high-end technical suit, the LZR Race X should be on your consideration list.

The Speedo LZR Pro Jammer is one of Speedo’s mid-range technical race suits for men.

Speedo, based in London UK, is the world wide top-selling race swimsuit company. Many of the planet’s best swimmers compete in Speedo’s swimsuits and the majority of the present-day world records were established by swimmers using their suits. Speedo is one of the leading swimsuit innovators and its Aqualab facility explores new textiles and manufacturing techniques to help build a faster swimsuit.

In 2010, Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) prohibited the use of full-length swimsuits. Since then, jammers have become the most used style of competition swimsuits for males. The jammer suit must abide by strict FINA rules before it is approved for racing. The suit can cover the swimmer’s upper legs but not their knees and should be made using a weaved textile.

LZR Pulse Fabric

A jammer’s fabric is perhaps the biggest thing to consider when selecting one. There have been a lot of developments in swimsuit fabric over the last few years. Many of these enhancements have been aimed at creating a swimsuit that’s light as well as aqua-repellent.

The LZR Pro Jammer is Speedo’s mid-range suit (MSRP $180) and uses their LZR Pulse fabric. The fabric was developed in Speedo’s Aqualab and is a blend of 75% nylon and 25% LYCRA Spandex.

Compared to jammers made from a polyester blend, the nylon fabric helps make the suit more comfortable, lighter and faster to dry. However, nylon has a tendency to lose color and shape quicker than polyester.

The Spandex fabric helps create a tight fit and compress the swimmer’s muscles. Speedo’s LZR Elite Jammer similar blend of fabrics but has a 65% nylon / 35% Spandex blend. This fabric, called Pulse+, and gives the swimmer extra muscle compression.

LZR Pro Uses Low Profile Seams

In addition to introducing inventive fabrics, many swimsuit providers are also adding innovative manufacturing procedures. These techniques are geared towards reducing the drag factor of the swimsuit. For instance, production procedures that use seam bonding, rather than the conventional stitching, help reduce drag produced by the swimsuit’s seams.

While Speedo’s LZR Elite jammer uses stitch-less bonded seams, the LZR Pro jammer uses traditional stitching. However, Speedo uses vertically orientated stitches which align with the direction of the swimmer to help reduce drag.

A last thing to consider when picking a swim jammer is the suit’s fit. Using optimal fabrics and production techniques, competition jammers try to compress the swimmer’s muscle mass. This muscle compression not only helps in cutting drag but also helps with oxygen circulation, supporting a faster recovery.

Speedo uses a 3-piece pattern with the LZR Pro jammer that is engineered to optimize the swimmer’s body. To arrive at this pattern, Speedo took hundreds of 3-D body scans from the world’s fastest swimmers. The result is a suit that delivers solid muscle compression which helps keep the swimmer streamline and aids faster recovery.

The swimsuit has been accredited for competition by NCAA and FINA. The Speedo LZR Pro jammer is available in black with green stitching or black with blue stitching. All-in-all, the suit is a great

The Speedo Aquablade Jammer is the manufacturer’s entry-level technical suit. Speedo is famous for producing excellent suits for competitive swimmers. They invest heavily in research and designed, with a eye towards helping swimmers gain an advantage. Speedo jammers are used by many World and Olympic Champions.

Speedo’s Aquablade jammer is approved by Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) for competition use. This regulatory body places restriction on the type of materials that can be used, plus the amount of body the jammer can cover.

Most technical suits include a blend of nylon or polyester, plus a material with elasticated qualities to help form a tight fit. The Speedo Aquablade jammer uses a 80% polyester / 20% LYRCA Spandex blend. While polyester is not as comfortable as nylon, it does offer better chlorine-resistance. This means that the Aquablade jammer is likely to last longer than other technical suits that use nylon and/or have a higher LYCRA content. Keep in mind, though, that this suit is not designed to be used for regular training. It’s intended to be used as a race suit.

The Aquablade jammer does not give as much compression as suits with higher LYRCA content. Speedo’s Pulse fabric is used in their LZR Pro jammer and is a 75% nylon and 25% LYCRA and the Pulse+ fabric is used in their LZR Elite jammer and is 65% nylon and 35% LYCRA. Both these suits are more expensive but offer a superior fit and compression.

The suit is constructed using reinforced seams. The LZR suits, and many others, use bonded or low-profile seams to reduce the drag coefficient.

While the suit does not offer the highest level of muscle compression, it does a good job of keeping a tight fit. Elite swimmers expect their race jammers to help compress the muscles covered by the suit. This helps reduce drag during the race.

The Speedo Aquablade Jammer has been approved for competition by FINA and is available in black, navy blue and royal blue. This suit is affordable and offers more endurance than many jammers.

The Speedo LZR Racer Elite 2 jammer was released in July 2014, to much fanfare. The suit is an improvement over Speedo’s very popular LZR Elite jammer.

About Speedo
Speedo is a world-leading swimwear manufacturer. They constantly create new technologies and designs that help elite swimmers gain an edge. Their swim jammers are worn by the likes of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and countless other World and Olympic champions.

About Jammers
Swim Jammers have become the preferred race suits since Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) outlawed the use of full-length suits in 2010. FINA have strict guidelines that dictate the suit’s cut, fabric and manufacturing process.

Speedo LZR Racer Elite 2 Jammer Fabric

The LZR Racer Elite 2 Jammer uses Speedo’s Pulse+ fabric, which is a 65% Nylon / 35% LYCRA Spandex blend. This is a change from the original LZR Elite, which had a 70% Nylon / 30% LYCRA blend. The additional LYRCA gives the suit extra compression and tightness. Speedo’s cheaper LZR Pro jammer uses a 75% Nylon / 25% LYCRA blend, which is a fabric they call Pulse.

The nylon adds softness and comfort to the suit. However, both Spandex and Nylon can be broken down by chlorine and oils, so this suit should be worn exclusively for racing and rinsed after each use to get the most life.

In addition to giving the suit extra tightness, the added LYCRA make the suit 40% more repellant than its predecessor.

Thanks to the high LYCRA content, the suit offers excellent compression. Muscle compression helps keep the swimmer hydro-dynamic. There are also studies showing that muscle compression can help improve recovery between races.

Speedo LZR Racer Elite 2 Jammer Bonded Seams

Rather than traditional stitching, Speedo uses bonding technology to join the suit’s fabrics. This creates flat seams which, compared to stitched seams, reduced the amount of drag created.
The suit is available in several colors. All include one black leg, with a choice of Fuchsia, Lime, Sapphire, Hot Coral, Green and Purple for the other.

The suit has been approved by FINA for competition.
